Educational Visits
It is very important that our students think ahead and consider their future careers and university courses. We start this process early at St George’s, providing our students with regular opportunities to visit work places and consider future career options, through opportunities as diverse as the Year 9 Industry Day, when all members of Year 9 visit one or more businesses to learn how they function, and the Lower Sixth German Embassy Careers Fair. As students progress through the school, many will choose to undertake voluntary Community Service or Work Experience in an area that links with their future career options. With the vast majority of our students going on to university, most will choose to travel to University Open Days by themselves. As part of our annual UCAS programme, we also run a Lower Sixth UCAS fact-finding trip to Anglia Ruskin University, as well as numerous one off visits to other universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and the University of London. Co-Curricular Visits As students progress through the school, they increasingly set their sights high! We therefore pride ourselves on offering a wide range of ambitious International Trips to enhance our students’ experiences and test their resilience beyond what would be possible if staying in the UK. Academic Trips Abroad Our students are often offered opportunities to extend their academic expertise in one or more subjects through a trip abroad. Some of the trips that have recently taken place abroad include:
Trips such as these greatly enhance our students’ motivation and enjoyment of their academic subjects. Social and Cultural Trips Abroad Twice a year, our Cultural Society travels to a major European city for the weekend. These trips are specifically designed to enhance our students’ knowledge and awareness of the culture in question, and they are especially popular with our younger students. Destinations recently travelled to include Amsterdam, Istanbul, Krakow and Auschwitz, Jerusalem and Prague. Support for Learning (SfL) The Support for Learning Department provides outstanding support to students at St George’s with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) in order for them to be suitably challenged and fulfil their potential in a safe environment. How do we do this?
Our Library at St George’s offers a welcoming, safe and comfortable environment with a peaceful atmosphere that is conducive to study. It provides an excellent range of resources, which are carefully selected to support our pupils’ academic studies and wider interests, as well as encouraging reading for pleasure and promoting independent learning. The collection is made up of more than 14,000 items. Fiction and non-fiction books are complemented by a selection of periodicals and magazines, newspapers, online resources, audio books on CD, and DVDs. All materials are classified and organised, using the Dewey scheme, and are catalogued on the Library’s computerised catalogue (Eclipse) to make them easy to locate. An on-going programme to tidy, evaluate, weed and update the stock ensures that the collection remains fresh, up-to-date and relevant. Recommendations are always welcome and we endeavour to fulfil requests through new acquisitions or inter-library loans. The Library is open throughout the school day for use by classes and by pupils undertaking private study and research. It is also open in the evenings for pupils to complete their prep. Drama and the Arts We are delighted to announce that renowned Theatre Director and Old St George’s, Max Stafford-Clark, has agreed to become the new Patron of St George’s Drama. His 'Out of Joint' Theatre Company will run a workshop at St George’s in May on 'Our Country's Good', Timberlake Wertenbaker's popular and award-winning play. 'Out of Joint' is touring its acclaimed production in the UK and internationally, following last year's run in the West End. Alongside the tour, it is offering a special day-long experience giving A Level students the opportunity to work on the play in depth with Max. St George’s offers a wonderful range of opportunities in Drama and The Arts. These include:

Co-Curricular Trips Abroad
Students always enjoy their co-curricular pursuits, so travelling abroad to further their interests and experiences is usually the icing on the cake! Recent examples of co-curricular trips abroad include:
Magic Bus Each year, a group of sixth form students travel to Mumbai in India for ten days to assist our partner charity Magic Bus in turning around the lives of Indian street children. Founded by old St George alumni, Matthew Spacie, this inspirational charity will also change the life of any St George’s student who joins this trip. The Wilderness Foundation The Wilderness Foundation UK provides opportunities for a range of education and youth support programmes in Britain, South Africa and elsewhere which draw on the special benefits that wilderness can provide. These include leadership skills and personal development programmes. Four girls recently took part in a pilot project called Wild Swans, a Wilderness Foundation initiative. As part of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold award, the girls raised the money to spend 24 days with four South African girls from a deprived community in the small town of Kynsna. “We feel that we have changed as people; we are more appreciative of our home," they said afterwards. World Challenge Expeditions World Challenge Expeditions (WCE) develops skills through service learning programmes, culminating in a team expedition overseas. WCE works with middle schools, high schools, colleges, individuals and groups, to ensure each participant benefits from a wide range of leadership and personal skills development, community service opportunities and off the beaten path exploration. Over the past four years 46 St George’s Pupils have been to Namibia on World Challenge Expeditions. Each of the three expeditions have been a tremendous success and have enabled St George’s pupils to learn a huge amount about themselves. St George’s Network The Old St George’s Society and St George’s School have embarked upon an exciting joint initiative to create The St George’s Network. The Network is for Old St George’s alumni, current and former parents, current and former masters and those with a close connection to the St George’s School community. St George’s Professional Networks aims are:
Music Music is part of the fabric that makes up St George’s life and has been for many years. St George’s School has broad opportunities for musicians of all types - our main aim is that everyone who wants to be involved musically can be accommodated. All pupils are involved in some way, whether it is singing in Chapel, participating in the Inter-House Singing Competition or through individual musical interest. St George’s musicians are supported by five full time members of staff and over 20 visiting instrumental and vocal teachers. Tuition is available in a wide range of instruments ranging from the violin and harp through to the bagpipes and the electric guitar! Singing plays a hugely important role both in Chapel and in more informal settings. Elsewhere, the School boasts a number of Orchestras, String Ensembles and Wind and Brass Groups. Our musicians regularly receive opportunities to perform at other venues. Recent Music Trips have included:
Language Level Guidelines for International Students We expect our international students to be at a certain CEFR language level, depending on what year they are joining St George’s. The minimum requirements are as follows:
The CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. This internationally recognised framework describes language ability on a scale of levels from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. The CEFR is used by organisations all over the world as a reliable benchmark of language ability. Short term places We would be happy to take international students for one term or one year only in Years 7 and 8. For Years 9 and above placements for one term or one year are not available. Number of places for international students In Years 5-8, we have approximately 6-10 boarding places for international students. In Years 9 and above, we have approximately 95 boarding places (15-20% of total). Scholarships available to overseas students The same scholarships are available to overseas students as to UK students. These include Academic, Music, Art, DT, Drama and Sport scholarships. Sixth Form entry requirements For Sixth Form, the equivalent to 5 GCSE’s B grades or better, or 5 C grades at HKCEE. The best years for an overseas student to enter St George’s are in Years 7, 9 and 12. However we do allow entrance in Years 8 and 10 if space is available. We will accept students mid year if space allows but recommend this only in Year 9. |
